Session 8: Round 2....Fight...Some More!!!
Alright I'm back! I took off last week because my mother was visiting so I didn't have time to work on the show. But as promised here's the follow-up to last session which is going to focus on boss battles. The “rules” are somewhat similar to last session, one per franchise and I don't differentiate regular boss battles from final bosses. It's a mix of OLD school and old school, RPG and one intruder (but Dan will love it). Anyway..
I hope you enjoy it.

Track 1:
Awakening – Xenogears, Yasunori Mitsuda, PSX, 1998
Aaaaaah Xenogears. If you haven't played this game.......shame on you! The best Japanese RPG I4ve ever played. Great characters, great anime cutscenes (with awful American dubbing), plot that is out of this world!! and of course, great soundtrack by Mitsuda. I still cannot decide if on its own my favorite soundtrack from him is Xenogears or Chrono Cross (every time I listen to one I put it on top of the other) but if I consider soundtrack and game at the same time then Xeno beats the crap out of Cross and leaves a bloody mess behind.
As usual with Mitsuda you can feel the ambiance and the feelings are everywhere. This is actually the final boss tune (btw if you haven't played the game do NOT read ANY FAQs, guide or whatnot, you will spoil your ass to world's end) and not you typical boss music but oh so sweet.

Track 2:
Boss – Castle of Illusion, Kamiya Studio, Genesis, 1990
Let's go old school!! this is the game that actually made me buy a Genesis. I saw it covered on a TV show and was blown away (my jaw literally dropped) so I got the console and played this game....I can't even count, it must have been a hundred times. The graphics are enchanting, the soundtrack is great and....it's Mickey!! what more can you ask for?
The boss track is very cool and engaging, nice pumping beat. A shame it's too short because I could listen to it looping for a while.

 |
Track 3:
Still More Fighting – Final Fantasy VII, Nobuo Uematsu, PSX, 1997
Hey look it's FFVII again! Now while Xenogears is my favorite RPG...by far, FF VII is till my first and like girls, you may get married to X but you always have a soft spot for your first. And this boss music is just freaking sweet! To me this is the best boss music ever, the same way that Chrono Trigger's regular combat tune is the best. It's so engaging you want to kick the boss's ass till kingdom come and when it loops you're pumped again!

 |
Track 4:
Holders of Power – Ys, Falcom Sound Team J.D.K., PC-Engine, 1989
Woohoo (if I do say so myself). First of all it's Ys (best game series EVER!) then it's Sound Team JDK (possibly best soundtrack group ever, battling it out with Kukeiha) and then well... listen to this rocking boss tune! You can rock out to this for hours and it's a good thing too because some bosses in Ys will have you try several times! But with this music in the back you always want to go back and beat them up!

 |
Track 5:
Last Battle ~ T260G – SaGa Frontier, Kenji Ito, 1997
Now I freaking love this tune!! It's a PSX game but it has this tune feeling from the 8-16bit era, albeit a nice upgraded tune quality. I've never played the game but every time I listen to the OST and this track comes up I flip. It's just that good. The way I understand it you can play the game as several heroes and each heroes obviously has a different ending, and a different last battle tune! Good beat, great opening build-up, good melody, good variations and bridges and shit like that. Bob the head, clap yo' hands and let it rip!

Session 7: Round 1....Fight!!
This week I'm doing a special combat music. My rules were to pick from games where the music changes when you fight someone. Like say in an RPG you walk around with the map music and when you fight you get the combat tune. Or in other games you mind have a variation of the map music when you engage someone. So either way that rules out fighting games and most platformers.... I debated allowing boss musics from platformers in here but I already have some many track just from RPGs that I decided against it. In fact I had so many tracks period that I decided to not even allow boss music, just regular battle.
I'm also doing one track per franchise....I hope!
So you mostly get RPG regular battle music. And next week.......boss music!
I hope you enjoy it.

Track 1:
Fighting – Final Fantasy VII, Nobuo Uematsu, PSX, 1997
This had to be in first place as FFVII is the first RPG I ever played! I have no clue why that is as I love the genre but I guess I was just introduced to it late, during the NES days I was too young and I didn't have a SNES so... Either way this game blew me away instantly and it still holds a very soft spot in my heart. I can still hear the slash of Cloud's sword or the aura build up of the limits when I listen to this....and it's been 11 years!! Also of note is the fact that this was the first break in battle music. All the battle tunes from II to VI have very similar melodies and this one broke the mold (aside with the 3D) so it deserves this place.

Track 2:
Battle for the Fields – Rudora no Hihou, Ryuji Sasai, SNES, 1996
This game is not widely known in the US sadly. Mostly because it came out in the hey-days of the SNES when FF VI and Chrono Trigger came out and killed every one. Also I'm not sure it was actually released in the US. I never played it but I would really like to someday as it has an amazing soundtrack and a friend told me it rocks.
Also of note is that one track on the cd is very reminiscent of one of Baten Kaitos on the GC....ummmm interesting.

 |
Track 3:
Battle 1 – SaGa Frontier, Kenji Ito, PSX, 1997
One of the lesser know franchise of Squaresoft (yes I know), SaGa also has some amazing soundtracks. I never actually played the game but my best friend did some and told me it was pretty hard as hell :p
You can play 7 heroes who coexist in the same world I believe (kinda like Suikoden III). I hope to play it someday but I have many other priorities on my list. Wait for next week when I throw the final boss track. It's amazing!

Track 4:
Battle 1 – Chrono Trigger, Yasunori Mitsuda, SNES, 1995
Quite possibly THE best battle track ever made. Even thought you have the option to avoid enemies why would you? I could fight monsters and level for hours thanks to this music, it's that good. There's not much I can say about Chrono that isn't already known but I'm suspicious this track was actually made Nobuo Uematsu. It is well known that he helped Mitsuda on this game as it was Mitsuda's first soundtrack (nice way to come out no?) and you can feel on certain tunes that it has more of a Uematsu touch. So yeah if anyone actually knows for sure well let me know.

 |
Track 5:
Battle 1 – Grandia, Noriyuki Iwadare, 1998
Would you look at that?? a non-Squaresoft game! :p
There were a bunch I wanted to throw in actually but I have to say most of these had great boss music but the regular combat tunes didn't live up to Square epicness.
Grandia managed to find a nice niche when it came out because it was much less serious than the other Squaresoft and Enix that came out at the time. In the beginning you would actually fight enemies with a frying pan! Anyway, the fight track is really cool. I enjoyed the drums in this one.

Session 6: Golden Falcom
This week I'm going with something I love (and I know John does too): Falcom!
This Company that brought us so many gems on the PC-Engine and other such as Ys, Legend of Xanadu, Sorcerian...
To tell the truth I discovered Falcom fairly late around 2000-2001. And the way I discovered it was easy. It was through it's music. I don't remember exactly how but I got some of Ys OSTs and was instantly hooked. Since then I've been trying to get all of them, get all Ys games and even more. Recently I bought a PC-Engine Duo as you know and the main and mostly only reason was Falcom for Ys and Xanadu (the only other reason I would have had to buy the console would be Dracula X – Chii no Rondo).
So please share the greatness that are Falcom soundtracks (most composed by Yu Suzuki and/or arranged by Ryo Yonemitsu) and if it doesn't make you want to play these games then......I feel sorry for you! BTW once again (and more than ever) it Is extremely hard picking just 5 tracks out of the whole Sound Team JDK database so if I were you I would expect a best of Ys Ys II Ys III, Sorcerian, Legend of Xanadu II, Ys Rearranged.... in the future :p
I hope you enjoy it.

Track 1:
The Last of Dragon Slayer – The Legend of Xanadu II, Falcom Sound Team JDK, PC-Engine, 1995.
In case you didn't notice (shame on you!) this song was featured in John's segment about the PC-Engine in Episode 8 of Retroware TV. You can always watch it again for an “oh yeah!” factor. The soundtrack for the game is divided in two. The first CD holds the in-game track which are sadly of lesser quality (but still pretty darn sweet!) and the second CD has all the cutscene music. This is one of them. It is nice and epic and ever since John asked me to look the track up I am hoping to find a fan translation patch for the game but it looks sweet!!!

Track 2:
Feena, First Steps Towards War, Palace – Symphony Ys, Falcom Sound Team JDK, PC-Engine, 1993
Lance thankfully allowed me to put a track that was above 10 minute long. The reason for this is that it includes two of the major tracks from Ys in one which helps a lot! Ys is Falcom's staple and this track represent everything that is epic and awesome about this game series. The track starts with the menu song which is very calm and soothing but after 2 minutes it engages into the map tune (obviously beautifully reorchestrated) then around 5 minutes goes into the Palace track which is a charming melancholic and moody track (the original feature water drops SFX) only to reloop into the intro and finish with the map tune. Picture, if you will, fighting enemies on the map with this music in the background and tell me this doesn't make for an amazing game?

 |
Track 3:
Varestain – J.D.K. Band 1, Falcom Sound Team JDK, PC-Engine, 1991
OK while I haven't played Ys III yet this track just...it's just that great!! listen to the whip! It's the track that plays in Valestine Castle and I have to say I CANNOT wait to get there and fight my way with this epic music!!
The remix is obviously rock with a great guitar piece and solo worthy of all the best hair bands of the 80s. Rock with me people! Oy! Oy! Oy!!

Track 4:
Endless History – Ys Perfect Collection, Falcom Sound Team JDK, PC-Engine, 1990
Yet another track that rocks in the best fashion of the power fist!!! But this one is with vocal which gives give is this fragile feel among all it's epic guitar and drums. This track is the ending of Ys called “The Morning Glow”, which plays during the final credits I believe (correct me if I'm wrong of course)and trust me you just don't want the game to freaking end. Thank God they gave us many more installments, remakes and such for are greatest pleasure. One insteresting tidbit is that when exporting the game to the US the translation people apparently weren't the best and the track was actually called “The Morning Grow” since “L” and “R” in Japan are pronounced the same. There were many other examples of this. But seriously I listen to this track and I imagine how awesome if would be to hear this live at a concert with the sound blasting and the voice echoing in the distance......man this would be heaven!

Track 5:
Cursed Piano – XenoCross, PC-Engine, 1991
Again this week I'm ending with an OC Remix track. This one come from the Sorcerian game and is originally called Cursed Oasis (or Cursed Desert depending on the translation). This is actually the track that made me discover the Sorcerian series, and realize that the greatness of Ys soundtracks went beyond Ys and in fact covered all of Falcom Sound Team JDK's soundtracks. If you were doing something else while listening to my show (if you even listen to it...) I hope this track made you stop and wonder. I just love how you can taste and feel the sadness and melancholy in this track. It is truly a beautiful piece and XenoCross is a very talented player. This should stay with you for a few hours even after you've stopped playing it.
