Season 2, Episode 8, Part 3: PC-Engine

So what did you guys think? :) I loved the episode myself. I have always been curious about the PC-Engine, a long time ago, it didn't even know that the PC-Engine was the same as the Turbografx-16, but it looks like it was one pretty sweet system, if you lived in Japan. CD-rom enabled fantastic cutscenes, music and graphic quality, must have been some experience to play games such as Ys and get a glimpse of how games would be in the future. :)

My knowledge about games for the PC-Engine is pretty dim though, it's Ys, Snatcher, Rondo of Blood and Neutopia. And I actually played Neutopia! I especially like Neutopia 2, and while people might say it's just a Zelda-clone, it feels a bit different than that. I don't know if you guys have played it but I found myself enjoying it immensely some years and years ago.
My experience from Ys comes from the remake for the PC version. But that's super awesome anyway!

The PC-Engine always felt to me like the odd system, I never heard much about it, it didn't have that much success outside Japan, but it had a very good library of quality games, it always felt like such a mystery to me. So I liked this episode, really enlightened me on the whole PC-Engine thing. :)

Arr? Yarr!

This episode got me thinking, what would be the cheapest route to be able to play most/all of the PCE/Turbo Graphix games.

The guys over at Talking Time seem to think a Japanese Duo or Duo-R would be my best bet, but I'm not sure I can play US games on either of those.

Yeah  a Japanese Duo is probably your best bet.  You will need to Mod it to play US games but it is a fairly easy mod, not much soldering at all.

As the two previous posters mentioned, a modded Japanese Duo-R is probably your most economical option.  A U.S. Duo/Kisado converter combo is both more expensive and harder to acquire.  Either one of these set-ups would allow you to play almost everything (except the SuperGrafx games).

Keep in mind that the CD games are region free and will work on either machine...it's only the HuCards you need to worry about.  Also keep in mind that the Japanese versions of most games are cheaper and generally just as easy to acquire as their American counterparts.  So even an unmodded Japanese unit is not a bad option to start out with.

I bought my TG-16 when toys R us was clearing them out for 50 bucks, I still have it and I still wonder if the guy on the box is Zach from saved by the bell.  I recently bought a japanese duo and that was pretty expensive, I wish I bought an American Duo back in the day because they were selling them for 100 bucks each at the end of its life, and now a mint in the box Turbo-Duo sells for alot of money.
