Camcorders Buying Advice
since you're all doing video shows I figured you might be able to help me.
I want to buy a camcorder before i go on my honeymoon in September so I'm doing some research. I want to get an HD cam because well it's becoming the norm and with my 42" TV and the one-day-in-my-living-room PS3 .......

Anyway so I am verging towards the Sony HDR-SR11 which seems like a great product.
the AVCHD format seems to become as good in quality as HDV and softwares are more compatible now so it seems the best bet for future.
I don't really want tapes as they are a pain to deal with.
Flash cards are fine but they add a pretty hefty added price (plus the SR-11 takes SD cards too) so HDD seems good to me.
I don't need 120G so 60G is enough and makes for an economy.

The quality seems on par with the other top video cameras out there like the Canon HF-10 or HV-30 but i really want a viewfinder and i don't really care for pocket size at all.
If I go with this camera i intend to buy a better battery for it and a case. I'd love to get a waterproof kit for when i'll be on the honeymoon in the ocean but they're around $200 which really sucks :(
maybe in the future I'll get a wide range lens, a microphone.... but for now it should be more than fine.

anyone have any experience with it? general advice and all ?

Re: Camcorders Buying Advice

First of all Mel congrats! I didn't even know you got/are getting merried! Or did I totally forget it? Ah I am tired so maybe I'll wake up tomorrow thinking myself a fool. But congrats non the less and really enjoy the honeymoon!

Now on to your topic...

I really wouldn't know but would be interested in opinions too. Mine is an older JVC DV recorder. Mine is starting to be pretty crappy, that's why I don't really use it as much for my video's. Most of the time I end up needing to shoot something like 3 times and not movie to much since it has real trouble focussing! Also my next one I'd really like to be able to connect an external mico n it since the sound quality of mine is nasty!

Question about means of recording. I've heard a couple of times that DV tapes to record yield best results, is this actually true? An HD would be so much easier...

Re: Camcorders Buying Advice

Hey Seb, sorry I didn't reply sooner I completely forgot.

I actually got married back in September last year but we just did the civil ceremony with the family. this year we're doing the church wedding and huge party in France with like 150 people..........can't wait for october when it's all over and done :)

So anyway I've been actively researching these past weeks and it's really hard because there's so much choice!!
And a lot of different things to consider.

Right now I'm verging on 2 models the Canon HV30 (Mini-DV) or the Sony HDR-SR11 (HDD)
The canon seems to have a slight better quality, non-proprietary horse shoe and easy editing thank to HDV format but when I hold it in my hand it feels a bit light 'cheap'
the Sony is very well made (Sony style) feels great in hand, has HDD so easy storage, a very nice veiwfinder for sunny outdoors, but has proprietary shoe and memory sticks and uses the AVCHD codec which seems to be a pain in the ass to edit (i'm still researching the new 2008 lines of editing software to be sure)
It feels to me that if you mostly film using a tripod the canon is better but if you're going to film by hand the Sony might feel better.....

Overall if editing didn't seem like such a pain I think I'd get the Sony but I'm still hesitant.
The Vegas Pro 8 seems to work, Pinnacle Studio 12 also but it seems iffy.
I've read good stuff about PowerDirector 8 but I can't really find many reviews........

all in all as you can see it's tough choice.

Lance and John both recommended the Canon.
Derek said he's planning on buying the Sony......

check this website it's got loads of information........one might say 'too much info'.
